Can we talk about NEON

With colours named 'Extra Hot Pink', 'Blinding Yellow', 'Flame Orange' and 'Lime Green' everyone from street style queens to the designers of the four major fashion weeks, everyone has neons in their collections.

Neon is a fashion fad that's exploded onto the scene over the last year. With the influence of Love Island stars and celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, the neon look is for sure a popular one, perhaps even making it to micro-trend status.

"Neutrals, darks and pastels have dominated the fashion scene over the past few years, [meaning] the sudden surge of neon has led to comparisons to the 80's."

And it's not the first time this 80's inspired trend has returned. Thanks to the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, the early 2000's also saw a return of the luminescent lovers. However having said that, in 2019 neon has made such a statement even our monarch, Her Majesty the Queen, has been spotted in a rather striking lime green look.

Amongst reemerging trends like retro tie dye cycling shorts, and shoulder padded power suits, neon had dominated SS19's catwalks too. Everything from ready to wear to elegant evening gowns were shown in the bright colours of the season. Designers such as Armani, Julien MacDonald, Ashish, Rochas, Emilia Wickstead, Gucci and Versace to name a few all had a large collection of neons displayed below.

In my opinion one of the biggest promoters of this quite extreme trend must be Love Island. This year, with it's own neon themed night, all islanders sported some form of fluorescence. Amber, Anna and Molly-Mae particularly liked their neon looks bringing out several more throughout the series; anything from swimsuits to bodysuit, miniskirts to evening dresses. It was even announced that the search term 'neon' increased 221% over the 8 weeks the show was on this summer, with the most popular tones being yellow and lime green.

In response to this explosion of interest, the brands we love responded. At the time of the show Asos had a total of 1,343 products under the search of 'neon'. Divya Nambiar, a 24-year-old from London told Radio 1

"It comes in ribbed, it comes in crop tops, lacy things... and there's different neon colours now."

I guess the question is will neon be the mircro-trend 2019 will be remembered by or will there be a resurgance on the return of Love Island 2020?
